Prepare the husks and corn

Prepare the husks and corn

If using fresh cobs, carefully peel off the husks and set aside the largest inner ones for wrapping. If using dried husks, soak them in the hot water for 15-20 minutes until soft and pliable, then drain. Cut the kernels from the cobs (or use thawed frozen corn) and grind in a food processor to a thick, coarse paste.

  • 10 corn cobs with husks
  • 2 liters hot water for soaking husks

✅ C'est prêt quand : husks are soft and pliable; corn is ground into a thick, coarse paste

History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 All over Cuba📅 Traditional🫔 CU

Tamales are made all over the Americas, and Cubans developed their own style: made with fresh rather than dried corn, with the pork mixed into the dough instead of hidden inside as a filling.

Street vendors once sold them from steaming buckets, calling out 'tamales, picantes y sin picante'.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Sweet fresh corn and savoury pork in one soft parcel make them a beloved Cuban snack and meal.

💡 Fun Fact

Making tamales is a family event in Cuba; grating and wrapping dozens of them can take a whole afternoon.
