The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Korea (Chinese merchants in Incheon)📅 Late 19th century🥞 KR

Hotteok is believed to have been brought to Korea by Chinese merchants who settled around the port of Incheon in the late 1800s. Koreans filled the pancakes with brown sugar and cinnamon instead of savoury fillings, and they became a beloved winter treat.

Today you'll find hotteok stalls on busy streets all over Korea, and in Busan they're stuffed with seeds as well.

⭐ Why It's Famous

It's one of the most famous Korean street foods, a warming treat on cold winter days.

💡 Fun Fact

Busan's version, ssiat hotteok, is cut open after frying and stuffed with sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
