The Story Behind the Dish
'Chaat' comes from the Hindi word for 'to lick' — as in licking your fingers. It describes a whole family of snacks built on contrasts: crunchy and soft, sweet and sour, cool yogurt and hot spice.
Chana chaat is one of the simplest and most popular, sold by vendors who toss each portion to order in a steel bowl.
⭐ Why It's Famous
High in protein and fibre and ready in minutes, chana chaat is street food that doubles as a healthy lunch.
💡 Fun Fact
Chaat masala gets its distinctive sulphurous tang from kala namak, a volcanic black salt.
