The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Puerto Rico and the Caribbean📅 Colonial era🍌 PR

Twice-fried green plantains are eaten across the Caribbean and Latin America, from Cuba's tostones to Colombia's patacones. In Puerto Rico they're served with almost everything: rice and beans, fried fish, pernil, or simply as a snack.

Mayo-ketchup, a pink sauce of mayonnaise, ketchup and garlic, is so popular on the island that it's sold ready-made in every supermarket.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Crunchy outside, soft inside and salty, they're the Puerto Rican answer to French fries.

💡 Fun Fact

A tostonera is a hinged wooden press made just for flattening plantains, found in many Puerto Rican kitchens.
