Steps

Prep the mango

Prep the mango

Peel the mango, cut the flesh away from the flat pit, and chop it into small, even cubes (about 1 cm). Make sure the mango is fully ripe and sweet, since it is the only sweetness in the recipe.

  • 1 (about 200 g) ripe mango

✅ Done when: mango is cut into small, even cubes

Blend smooth

Blend smooth

Put the 200 g of mango, 230 g of the yogurt (reserve the remaining 20 g for the optional garnish in step 5), and cinnamon (if using) in a blender or small food processor. Blend for about 1 minute until completely smooth and thick, like a loose paste; add the water only if it will not move through the blades.

  • 200 g prepped mango
  • 230 g yogurt
  • 1 pinch cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp (optional) water

✅ Done when: mixture is completely smooth and thick, like a loose paste

History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 United States📅 Early 2000s to today🥭 US

Freeze-dried "yogurt melts" became a familiar sight on American supermarket shelves as a snack for babies and toddlers, prized because the little pieces soften and dissolve almost the moment they touch saliva, lowering the choking risk for new eaters. Home cooks soon realized the same trick worked beautifully with a blender and a freezer, using real fruit instead of freeze-dried powder.

Mango became a favourite flavour because it blends into a naturally sweet, smooth purée on its own, so no sugar needs to be added — just ripe fruit and plain yogurt, piped into small drops and frozen solid.

⭐ Why It's Famous

They solve a real parenting problem: a cool, fruity, no-added-sugar treat sized exactly for tiny hands and new teeth, that melts away before it can be a hazard.

💡 Fun Fact

The commercial version inspired a whole wave of homemade copies once parents noticed how few ingredients were actually needed to make them.
