History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Peruvian Amazon (Tarapoto, Iquitos, Moyobamba)📅 Colonial era🍃 PE

Juane is eaten above all on 24 June, the feast of San Juan, the most important festival in the Peruvian Amazon. Its round shape is said to represent the head of John the Baptist.

Rice and chicken arrived with the Spanish; Amazonian cooks joined them with the rainforest tradition of cooking food wrapped in leaves.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Fragrant, filling and easy to carry, it's the food of riverside picnics and village festivals.

💡 Fun Fact

Bijao leaves give the rice a subtle herbal aroma that banana leaves can't quite match.
