The Story Behind the Dish
Sweet red bean paste has been part of Japanese confectionery for centuries. The modern dorayaki, two pancakes sandwiching the filling, is credited to the Usagiya sweet shop in Ueno, Tokyo, which opened in 1913.
The name comes from dora, a gong: the round pancakes were said to look like one. Dorayaki is sold at traditional wagashi shops, supermarkets and convenience stores across Japan.
⭐ Why It's Famous
Soft, honey-scented pancakes and sweet bean paste make a gentle, not-too-sweet treat that's loved by all ages.
💡 Fun Fact
Dorayaki is the favourite food of Doraemon, the famous robot cat from Japanese manga and anime.
